The harmonica, also known as the French harp or harmonica, is a free reed wind instrument widely used in various musical genres around the world, especially in blues, American folk, classical music, jazz, country music, and rock music. There are many types of harmonica, including diatonic, chromatic, vibrato, octave, orchestral and bass versions. When playing a harmonica, the mouth (lips and tongue) is used to direct air flow along the mouthpiece into or out of one or more holes. Behind each hole is a chamber containing at least one reed. The most common is a diatonic Richter-tuned harmonica, with ten airways and twenty reeds, commonly known as the blues harp. The harmonica reed is a flat, elongated spring, usually made of brass, stainless steel or bronze, with one end fixed to a notch that serves as an airway. When the player's air vibrates the free end of the reed, it alternately blocks and unblocks the airway, thereby producing sound. Reeds can be tuned to different pitches. The tuning may involve changing the length of the reed, the weight near the free end, or the hardness near the fixed end. Longer, heavier, and more elastic reeds will produce a deeper and lower sound; shorter, lighter, and harder reeds will produce a higher tone. If, like most modern harmonicas, the reed is fixed above or below the reed slot, rather than on the plane of the reed slot, it will more easily respond to the airflow that initially pushes it into the direction of the reed slot, that is, as a closed reed.
